Life before Christmas

As much as I try to keep our lives normal meaning without typical Christmas season craziness, we end up rushing, doing more instead of relaxing and enjoying the season.

What that means is that I have less time for blogging, though I am trying to read and comment.

I am proud of myself for keeping up with my running and backpacking training. We are planning on doing John Muir Trail, which is 220mi trail in the Sierras. So ever so often I put my 40lb pack on and walk our hilly neighborhood. I am hoping that on the real trail  my pack will not go over 30lb. This time of year the neighborhood is very pretty with many houses festively glowing in the dark. I will confess right away that our house did not make the cut because we are just way, too lazy environmentally conscious so we settled for a simple link of lights.

And then there is running. A spell of very cold and sometimes wet mornings made me realize that if I want to build up my mileage I will need some foot protection. I opted for huaraches, as simple shoe as one could get. I ordered a kit from invisible shoe website. Basically it is just a thin, 4mm Vibram sole and straps. The shoe takes minutes to make or one can order it custom made. I decided to be adventurous and made my own. Honestly I did not expect to like them. I was afraid that I would never learn to tie them right or that the straps would be rubbing my foot or that I would feel as if I were running in flip-flops. Nothing like that. I ran 5miles in them and did not have to re-tie them even once. They did very well on asphalt and a muddy trail. Downhill portion of the trail was a challenge but I have never had shoes that would keep me from sliding down muddy slopes so I did not expect huaraches to perform better either.
As soon as I made my huaraches the weather got warmer so I won't be using them at least till it gets cold again. I like running sans shoes more but I am glad to have something that is very lightweight so I can carry it with me if in case my feet start complaining too much.

Another excuse for not posting much (beside Christmas and shoe making) is that my phone finally died and that happened, of course, before my contract expired. My son's phone was up for an upgrade and he generously offered his turn so I could get I new phone. He did that for me without me asking him. Wow. Teenagers have souls after all. :) So I got myself an iphone and joined a club of smart phone owners. Now I can be like all those people checking their e-mails at the dinner table, posting to facebook (I will need to get the account there) and doing all those things that used to annoy me so much. Notice, I already said 'used to annoy me'. Now I can be annoying also. I understand that I can even blog from that thing so no more excuses that I did not post because I got stuck in traffic. Is blogging while stuck in a traffic jam considered texting while driving?
But for now I am just wasting time playing with this cool toy wondering how I ever managed to live without it. I am wondering how much time this phone will help me save as soon as I stop wasting it on playing with it. So instead of putting more decorations on our house I am downloading podcasts, synchronizing calendars and getting tons of apps I won't be using.

But right now my cat is purring my ear off so I need to go and pet her.

You all have a great day and don't get Christmas craziness get to you, relax enjoy, have some eggnog and  go for a walk to see Christmas decorations.

Dear blogger: I have a Christmas wish: Could you fix formatting bugs so pictures stay where I put them and text does not jump all over the page and previews show what the post will really look like once published?

Ha ha - I have the same wish from Blogger! Sometimes very frustrating to get all the pictures the way you want them!
Enjoyed seeing the decorated houses - and how the heck did you get it to snow on your blog???

If blogger answers your wish, can you let me know?

I got an iphone not all that long ago too, and I'm still not sure it was right for me. I don't use a fraction of its capabilities...maybe a generational thing?

Enjoy the season!

How nice of your son. That is really cool.
I want to see a picture of the huraches (sp?)
I am digging the snow falling on your blog. That kind of snow I can appreciate.

As usual, your pictures are beautiful. I'm curious to see how your hurraches do in wet and cold. I've decided that I can deal with cold but not wet and cold together. I wouldn't mind trying them, and they don't seem like an expensive trial thing. I've got an i phone too and don't use it like it could be. I just like it for the camera. It's pretty decent and I've always got it with me. Oh and the games keep my 5 year old occupied if he's tagging along with me somewhere boring. Hope it stays nice and warm for you!

I'm with you, oh so busy! It's hard to keep up! We're also going less commercial this year, but it doesn't seem to make things too much easier!
Love the shoes - you make me laugh!
It was 37 on my run this morning - I lasted 3 miles - I'm going to try again tonight with the hubbs and go running and looking at lights ;)
Have a great week!

I'm going to have to try those "shoes". The fact that you didn't have to adjust the straps blows my mind!

I cannot belive that you made those things and then ran 5 miles in them. I simply don't get it :-) But, hey, I do not judge in the least. I may not get it, but that doesn't mean I don't think it's kinda cool.

Great pics!

Someone obviously raised that boy well:) Too sweet. My teen wanted a new phone for Christmas and is off to the store with his dad to pick it up today, after finals. I am not a smart phone owner... I suspect I would be lacking the "smart" part to figure it out.

Good to know the hurraches worked well for you. I am definitely curious to try them, but, in contrast to you, I would need the weather to warm up. I love the idea of making them myself though.

And YES, please add my name to that Christmas letter to Blogger. Make all our dreams come true, Blogger!!!

All of those light pictures are gorgeous and put my in the spirit, thanks for that!
I love it that you had to quit blogging to go pet your cat, you always have your priorities in the right place.
Hugs and Happy Holidays!

I loved your comment on my blog about the tough winter we are having... and I totally laughed out loud at your "with our recent cold and wet mornings, I need foot protection, so I made some huaraches." -- I love your idea of foot protection during inclement weather! Too awesome.

That's so nice of your son -- enjoy your new phone! :)

xoxo,
A

We have raccoons and even a cougar in the winter time around here. We just secured the coop with locks and have chicken wire over the outdoor run too. We'll see if it holds up through the whole winter. Fresh eggs are the best! Thanks for your constant support and comments!

I don't have an iphone, but I do have a $25/mo. pay-as-you-go smartphone with unlimited texting and web so I can enjoy the web anywhere and everywhere. It is so LOVELY! Welcome to the dark side!

Yeah I'd like to know what Blogger says too! I assume it looks like it is snowing because you made it do that which is very cool!

I am sooo impressed with your dedication to getting out there and exercising, even when the weather is less than perfect - and that John Muir trail sounds wonderful!!

Happy cat petting!! (for what it's worth, our cat has a habit of using me as a chew toy!!)
