New goals?

So now, that I am done with John Muir Trail, I am looking for a new challenge and I am looking for ideas.
Love biking or running early in the morning
Since my JMT, I have been quite good with my workout regime, I've been running, biking, lifting but I think I could use more structure that training vs. just exercise provides.

In case you haven't noticed, I am not much into racing, and there is a reason for that. Actually, just setting goals makes me worried that something will go wrong. Let me explain. In the past, I had signed up for four (yes, four!) marathons, and two 50k trail runs. I have not participated even in even one and not because I had not trained enough. Except for one marathon, when I got sick with a 104F flu just two days before, all the other races I had to skip either because somebody in my very close family died, or got hospitalized and I had to go to Poland. I am very seriously not kidding. Even this year JMT got interrupted by death.  A curse comes to mind. The obvious solution would be to schedule some even in Poland, but I don't think I want to do that.
Now I don't really want to draw any conclusions here but this is quite a coincidence to have to cancel six events like that.
What do you think, should I give up or keep on trying? After all, I did manage to complete the JMT so maybe, just maybe the tide is turning around. I am hoping you can give me some ideas and if you know any spells to repel curses, I would be more than interested. :-)

I hope all East Coast friends and their families are fine and that hurricane Irene is not causing too much trouble.

I used to have to train for something but now I just enjoy doing all my sports. So not sure what to tell you except that there are some intriguing trail marathons out there.....

I'm sorry, I don't know any spells to repel curses. Maybe what you said was a coincidence and you could plan again and sign up for another race. Please, let me know your decision!

The hurricane Irene is not causing too much trouble and that's a good news.

Oh, that does sound suspiciously like a curse. I don't know what to tell you, but it seems like you don't need to be "signed up for something" to enjoy training? Or are there things you could train for and only sign up on the day of the event?

That is just plain dumb luck you've had...but I think you got to get that monkey off your back and plan a race. I think a 50K trail race would be ideal for you. Keep signing up until you can get that done, having a goal out there is much more motivating...and eventually you'll run out of friends and family in Poland, right? :) JK!!

YIKES! That is a lot of coincidences! I want to tell you to just go for it & try for another race or something you really want to do but I don't want you to blame me if something happens! ;-)

If you don't do a race, maybe a goal in terms of something exercise wise you really want to accomplish & set out goals to do that...

Now that is really bad luck. I think you should enter some nice trail race and break the curse for good.

It seems like a lot of the Bay Area trail races are open for registration up until like 30 min before the race starts. Maybe train up and, to pull a fast one on your "curse", register on race morning. :) Might be enough to outsmart it and break the cycle! :)

I agree with Karen's recommendation! I feel you! Given my crazy life, I tend to sign up for races at the last minute! I hope your curse is finally over for good!

A new goal? Some workouts all around the world with your bloggers' friends.
I think you have to enter some race, in case with a good scenery.

I hear you with the hesitation signing up for races. I get injured more frequently that I care to know and have to back out of races.
