Lets talk food, for a change

Before I start on food, I want to thank you all, my bloggy friends, for the training advice. I knew I could count on you.

I like this quote:

People are fed by the food industry, which pays no attention to health, and are healed by the health industry, which pays no attention to food.
-- Wendell Berry

I haven't talked about food in a while and since this seems to be an obsessive topic for our generation, here it goes.
I am still mostly paleo, which means I limit my grain intake to a minimum. I figure that since our pre-ancestors managed to evolve over the millennia on such diet, it cannot be bad for us.  I don't think they suffered from diabetes either.  The last time I checked my cholesterol, sugar, and other such things they were in a very healthy range, whatever that means. Yes, I have developed some mistrust in the validity of those numbers too.

Confession: many of my meals on John Muir Trail this summer were quite far from what I consider an ideal diet for me. I ate a lot of food loaded with pasta and white rice. The horror!
Excuse: I did not manage to prepare and dehydrate all of my meals for the trek so had to buy commercial stuff and did not find any that were paleo, or at least with brown rice. Darn!

Now, that I am back, I am eating what I believe my pre-ancestors used to eat.

This food pyramid comes pretty close to what I fuel my body with but with some modifications:
--I am pretty sure cavemen and cavewomen were regularly feasting on, very dark chocolate, coffee, and red wine.  :-) and whoever prepared that pyramid picture just forgot about those
-- :-) It is also obvious to me that this pyramid is missing Char's cupcakes. :-)
-- as much as I love good cheeses, I have to avoid them otherwise I would not be able to stop, oh, well, just another addiction I have to watch, so that wedge of cheese you see there - erase it
-- occasionally I will eat yogurt and drink kefir, both plain or with fresh fruit (yum!)
-- on very rare occasions I will eat some raw honey (yeah, that one I have to make sure is out of reach of my paws too)

I've been eating like that for quite some time now and I feel great. There is nothing better than a carefully prepared but simple salad with some added protein. I could eat that for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Just the process of cutting up veggies makes me happy. So shoot me, I realize that cave people did not waste their time chopping veggies, arranging them in a bowl and sprinkling them with herbs and spices. Well, I am not as pure as I would like to be, some of that civilization of ours has rubbed off on me too.
And then there are roasted root veggies sprinkled with olive oil (surely a paleo fat), which especially in winter taste just heavenly.

So as you can clearly see I am not that much into dogma and ever so often I will stray and try things that are not on my list for foods to eat, like this recipe from Amy. Me, being me, I had to modify it "a bit" (sorry Amy, had to try cilantro in place of parsley, and there were some other changes... sorry again...), but not too many. It is yummy, and quite filling, trust me. Just try it for yourself and arrange it on your plate the way Amy did; Mine did not look nearly as nice. Oh, well, I am a cave woman after all, I shouldn't even own plates.

If you expected me to post my own recipes, tough luck; I don't really have any. I improvise as I go, every meal is different and unique, kind of like my marathon training programs. :)

So what are you eating, especially when you are in training?

And last but not least, I want to thank Michele for this award:

Michele writes:"Liebster means 'favorite' or 'love' in German and can be presented to bloggers you love that have fewwer than 200 followers."

Now I am to pass this award to people whose blogs I love. That would be all of you. Every one of you has something in your blog that inspires, motivates, makes me think, elicits a smile or a tear. I cannot choose one over the other so this award goes to all. Feel free to use it, you have earned it. And thank you for your virtual friendship.

Hi Ewa! I want to eat how you described above, but with minimal/no meat and limited cheese. I'll be having fun with that next month!

I love fresh cilantro!! It makes nearly everything taste super! I use a LOT of it in my cooking and salads.

Great post, Ewa!
I always make salad too! And I like cutting up veggies such as red onions, which protect artery walls, and brussels sprouts, which are rich in vitamin C and K.
Maybe cave people used to eat red onions :)
Thanks for sharing this healthy post!

I like your take on paleo. So much of it makes sense, but I would have to cheat with some dairy now and again. And olive oil. Roasted root vegetables w/ olive oil is one of life's simple pleasures--just made a batch last night!

And you're right--why won't I kayak in the rain? I'm going to go for it!

I bet the cilantro was a great addition! I hardly every use it because I am the only person in my family who actually likes it...
Anyway glad you liked the recipe!

I like your food philosophy! People tend to get so uppity and defensive about their food, it's refreshing to read your post and your laid-back attitude.

I eat a lot of fresh fruit and veggies, which is easy at this time of year. I am easy on whole grains, because I LOVE them, especially bread! I love a fresh chopped salad with kidney beans or black beans, a little corn and some nuts thrown in. One of my favs, actually. I also adore the Greek yogurt mixed with honey at Trader Joe's. It is a full 300 cals, so I only have half at a time, but boy is that YUM!!! Have a great weekend!

I'm not crazy about meat and the way it tastes. I'm mostly into veggies, dairy, and chocolate. So I make burgers out of beans or Matt's famous nut and seed patties (that taste like peanut butter).

Basically, I try to eat local and whole foods...then add a little bit of yogurt, cheese, and chocolate for balance :)

I have to laugh as I am reading this and eating an oatmeal cookie for breakfast....:)

When I'm eating "on plan," I eat more protein and veggies than I ever used to, and less grains. I think I feel better that way but it is sooo not how I would choose to eat. Just being honest:)

I know that cavemen used to eat dark chocolate and red wine. According to my kids I came from that era. And I'm almost certain my cupcakes are paleo :)

LOVE that first quote! I am always late to the game cause I get my updates of blogs by email & seems with most, they come a day late & a dollar short - an old person's quote - like me! ;-)

I enjoyed reading how you eat & live. I always say to each their own.. well, I am not happy with a person eating themselves to death like the lady on Dr. Oz yesterday!

I don't really limit food groups except I can't eat dairy. Of course if I have bread or pasta (not often cause not my thing) & things like that, I go the non white flour stuff & healthy, whole grain breads. I eat very very little processed foods as well.

Saying all that, I don't strive to be perfect & I have my big ole bakery cookies & don't care what the ingredients are & I may have a bit of this or that which does not meet my normal eating but I am fine with that! :-)

I am so glad Char's cupcakes are on that diet...I may be able to try it then. Can we add Oreo's too? Especially the Halloween ones with orange middles? :)

I know I eat better when I am training then when I'm injured and being a super whiny sour puss feeling sorry for myself...but I also tend to be very lazy and just wish someone would make all my meals, then I'd just eat whatever was placed in front of me. Wanna move to Colorado? :)

Thanks for your friendship as well Ewa! Somehow it feels like much more than virtual. Food is one of the areas where I can really improve and learn a lot. I kind of eat what ever I feel like, but I do keep a healthy eye on things.

Interesting post, the hectic life sometimes let us eat every kind of food and this is a big mistake.
However I have many things to learn about this subject. For example I drink Coca Cola and this is not good!
During my training I eat a lot of pasta, vegetables and proteins (meat).

I'm being so free to answer your question on Amy's blog if slower people are intimidated by the fast races in Holland. I'm not sure about that. As a slow runner myself I'm not intimidated but it's not fun to be one of the last to finish all the time. Amy told me that US races have much more slower runners than in Europe. In Europe there are almost every race time limits, 3 hours for a half and 5 for a full marathon is very common.

In the US a lot of people use the Galloway method: run-walk-run. In Holland almost nobody uses that method. Sure people do take walk breaks but usually only at the end of a race when it's getting tougher.

I do have to say I like the US approach more because this way also the slow runners can join without feeling disappointed because everybody else is faster.

Hi Ewa, thanks for your comments regarding the walking poles. I must admit that I don't think I'd use them without proper and enough training with them. I don't really have enough time for training with them and don't want to risk having difficulties with them out on a mountain. I do have a Mount Kilimanjaro trip planned somewhere in the future and know they are very handy for that.

There is a real possibility of a Kilimanjaro trip about 18 months from now.

Curious: Did man quit evolving 15,000 years ago. Do our bodies evolve with our food system, and with our shoes...? Not being trite, really curious what your thoughts are. Do you drive a chariot, or an SUV? To you run to deliver messages, or text them? Again, I adore you, appreciate you, and respect you, but where do you draw the line, and why....? Email me.... rc

Hope you are doing well! Keep focused!!

Are you running, biking or hiking? Maybe you are visiting a special place in your country: I'm curious :)
I hope everything is okay, Ewa! Take care!
